The halls of Indian Lake High School are getting an after-hours workout with the new Winter Walking Program.

Nearly 40 community members logged laps during the very first evening of the program on Wednesday, January 10th.
Russells Point residents Melanie Braga, and her friend Cathryn Moore, were excited to get some exercise.
"It's just nice to get to do this," Braga said. "We've been stranded in the house because of the weather. This is great!"
Lakeview residents Susan and Savannaha Crish walked several laps carrying baby Scarlett.
"We just wanted to get out and get moving and this is a safe place (to walk)," Susan Crish said.
Indian Lake Schools teamed up with the Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District and Mary Rutan Hospital to expand the Winter Walking Program to the Indian Lake area after a successful start at Bellefontaine City Schools in 2017.
Walking is scheduled Monday through Thursday from 6-7:30 pm at Indian Lake High School from January through March on nights when there are no scheduled athletic contests. (see list of dates below)
Indian Lake High School Intervention Specialist Jenifer Ignarski volunteers with the program.
She explains, "We just ask that walkers sign in, so we can keep track of how many times they walk. Signs are posted to show the routes and mileage. We've got a route without stairs and one with stairs depending on a walker's fitness level."
Indian Lake Schools Interim Superintendent Rob Underwood says, "We are extremely pleased with the turnout so far and hope even more people are able to join in. This is a great opportunity for the public to use our facilities and we are glad to partner with the Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District and Mary Rutan Hospital to host."
The Winter Walking Program is free and open to the public. In addition, anyone who participates at least ten times through March will be eligible for prizes. School officials add Winter Walking will not take place if classes are cancelled for inclement weather.
