Interim Superintendent's Message

Welcome to the Indian Lake Schools website.  It is an honor and privilege to serve the district and community as the school superintendent.  Located in Logan County, Indian Lake Schools offers the benefits and familiarity of a small, rural school, yet is large enough to provide exceptional educational and extracurricular opportunities.  The district is comprised four towns: Huntsville, Lakeview, Lewistown, and Russells Point.  An elementary, middle, and high school along with athletic facilities are all housed on one campus conveniently located at the corner of State Route 235 and 274.  There is a strong manufacturing and agricultural influence, but the community is best known for having one of the largest, most highly visited lakes in the state, Indian Lake.

The success and quality of service provided by the school is vital to the growth and prosperity of our community.  The district aspires to “Educate, Inspire, Empower” through collaboration with families, community leaders, and businesses.  Our community and schools support one another to ensure that students have access to academic and extracurricular opportunities that will prepare them to compete in the 21st Century job market.  There has been a strong commitment to improving the graduation rate, which has risen from 85.2% on the 2012-13 Report Card to 97.8% on the 2015-16 Report Card.

We are dedicated to increasing student achievement and realize that there is much work to do in this area.  We also know that we are more than a Report Card and that there are numerous ways to measure student success.  Therefore, we have allocated resources to provide learning opportunities that are not available in many schools of this size.  Seniors may choose to complete an internship and there are online and blended learning opportunities available.  There is an extensive College Credit Plus offering with many certified teachers on campus.  Competition robotics clubs at the middle and high school are supported by Honda Transmission.  There is a Builders Club at the middle school and an after school Welding and Carpentry Club at the high school.  Students can also find their niche in Vocational Agriculture and FFA, business courses and Business Professionals of America, or Family Consumer Science and FCCLA.  After school Art Club, Science Club, math and reading tutoring, and Commit to be Fit are all offered at the high school along with traditional, competitive athletic and music extracurricular activities.

Indian Lake boasts an experienced teaching staff with 13 average years of experience.  Approximately 72% of the teachers hold a Master’s Degree.  We know that teaching goes beyond academics, so there is a strong focus on relationship building.  The elementary utilizes a Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) called the “Laker Zone” and a Leapin’ Lakers jump rope team to promote healthy habits, while the middle school also uses PBIS and a mentoring program that is supported by community leaders.  The high school has instituted an Advisory Period called Laker Time and seniors are required to complete volunteer work prior to graduation as a way to give back to the community.

Indian Lake Schools strives to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars and currently has an operating spending per pupil below the state average.  67.8% of all expenditures are spent directly on classroom instruction, which also exceeds the state average.  We strive to provide a cost effective, excellent educational experience where students can reach their full potential.

Thank you for your support and for trusting us with the vital responsibility of educating our youth.

Sincerely,

Robert J. Underwood
